GTA 6 missions and how long the story is

Rockstar hasn't said how long GTA 6's story is or how many missions it has, but the Extended Look already showed robberies, getaways, races and jobs for other criminals, with Jason and Lucia as interchangeable protagonists. This guide gathers what has been shown and will be completed with the mission list after the 19 November launch.

The missions seen so far

The Extended Look shows several kinds of jobs: gas station and store robberies, a shoot-out escape with Raul Bautista, drug pickups, races, club visits and security work. Brian Heder hands Jason his first jobs, and other characters such as Raul, Boobie Ike and Dre'Quan Priest run businesses that hint at future missions.

Missions will be more open than in GTA V. According to Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, in his interview with IGN, the first mission in the Extended Look, the escape from the apartment block, has several escape routes. In Raul's, you first shoot as Jason while Lucia drives and then take the wheel yourself, and you can stray from the suggested route. Rockstar still steers the key story moments, but it tries to make missions work by the same rules as the open world.

Playing as Jason and Lucia

Rockstar has confirmed you will be able to switch freely between the two for most of the game, although the option is locked at certain story moments. Some jobs appear to be reserved for one of them. We explain it in our story on the protagonists.

The relationship between the two also matters. Doing missions together isn't enough to keep it alive: they need to spend time together outside them, and whether you look after it or not changes how their story unfolds. The romance is optional; if it's not for you, they remain partners in crime.

Are there decisions that change the ending?

Yes. Nelson explains that there are big and small decisions: some weigh in on the spot and others add up. The Criminal Profile counts too: it records what kind of criminal you are based on how you play, and changes how the world reacts and how the story moves forward.

How long is GTA 6's story?

There is no official figure. For reference, according to HowLongToBeat, GTA V's main story takes about 32 hours and Red Dead Redemption 2's about 50. With a map that, according to Rockstar North, is twice the size of GTA V's, it is reasonable to expect a story at least as long.
