The GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA V's, and fans are already drawing it
GTA 6 will have the biggest map Rockstar has ever made. According to Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, Leonida is twice the size of GTA V's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, and Vice City alone is double Los Santos. Here is what those numbers mean, how the map stacks up against the rest of Rockstar's games, and how the community is rebuilding it frame by frame in State of Leonida.

How big is the GTA 6 map?
During a presentation of the game at Rockstar North's offices in late August 2026, Rob Nelson finally gave a sense of scale: the GTA 6 map is two times GTA V's and three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. On top of that, Vice City is twice as big as Los Santos, GTA V's city.

To put it into perspective, this is how Leonida compares with the studio's other open worlds, using GTA V as the baseline:
| Game | Year | Size vs GTA V | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA VI | 2026 | 2× | Rockstar North |
| GTA V | 2013 | 1× | Baseline |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | ≈ 0.67× | Derived from Rockstar North's figures |
| GTA San Andreas | 2004 | ≈ 0.45× | Community estimate |
| GTA IV | 2008 | ≈ 0.2× | Community estimate |
| GTA Vice City | 2002 | ≈ 0.1× | Community estimate |
The leap is huge: the 2026 Vice City alone covers more ground than the whole of 2002's Vice City, and the full map is roughly twenty times the size of that game's.
State of Leonida: the map fans are building from the trailers
Long before Rockstar talked about size, the community was already measuring Leonida. State of Leonida is a fan-made interactive map that rebuilds the state from the trailers, the official screenshots and the game's website.
The method is as simple to explain as it is painstaking to carry out: contributors go through the videos frame by frame, identify roads, buildings, bridges and coastlines, and cross-reference them with satellite imagery and Florida's real geography to place every shot on the map. Each marker links to the trailer frame it comes from and, where there is one, to the real-world location that inspired it.
- Who is behind it: the GTA 6 Mapping Community, a group of fans organised on Discord.
- What it covers: hundreds of points of interest, from Vice City neighbourhoods to highways, airports and rural areas.
- How reliable it is: when an alleged full map leaked in August 2026, its layout largely matched what the project had been drawing for years.
It is an unofficial project with no connection to Rockstar Games or Take-Two, but right now it is the best way to get a feel for Leonida's geography before launch. It is well worth getting lost in for a while.
The six confirmed regions
| Region | Real-world inspiration | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami | Beaches, art deco, nightlife and Rockstar's most detailed city |
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Tropical islands, open sea and Jason's home turf |
| Grassrivers | Everglades | Wetlands, alligators and airboats |
| Port Gellhorn | Gulf Coast | A run-down port and industrial town |
| Ambrosia | Inland Florida | The rural, industrial heart of the state |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | National parks | Forests and mountains to explore outdoors |
Vice City is the heart of the map: a modern Miami of white-sand beaches, art deco buildings and clubs, and we now know it is twice the size of Los Santos. To the south, the Leonida Keys form a tropical archipelago where Jason Duval lives at the start of the story. Grassrivers recreates the Everglades, with alligators and airboats, while Port Gellhorn brings the working-class, dockside feel of the Gulf Coast. Inland, Ambrosia has a rural and industrial profile, and Mount Kalaga National Park saves forests and mountains for exploring far from the city.
You can explore them one by one on our interactive Leonida map.
Leonida, Rockstar's Florida
The series already visited Vice City in GTA: Vice City (2002) and Vice City Stories (2006), both set in the 1980s. GTA 6 brings it back in the present day and, for the first time, as part of a whole state. Across the two trailers and the Extended Look shown on Netflix on 27 August 2026, Rockstar has shown packed beaches, police chases, nightclubs, corner shops and plenty of wildlife, with a population density the company describes as the most ambitious in its history.
