Which vehicles have been seen

The trailers and the Extended Look show a very varied Leonida on wheels: sports cars around Vice City, classic muscle cars, luxury SUVs and police cruisers in full pursuit, plus motorbikes. Water matters as much as tarmac: speedboats and yachts in the bay, jet skis along the coast and airboats crossing Grassrivers. In the sky there are seaplanes and helicopters, police ones included.

As usual in the series, the brands and models are made-up versions inspired by real cars.

How to steal cars in GTA 6

Stealing a parked car is no longer just a matter of opening the door and driving off. First, it's worth scanning it with your phone: point at the car and it tells you whether it's locked, whether it has an alarm or a tracker, how much you'd get for it and how much it costs to register it in your name. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, showed it in his interview with IGN. Then, depending on the car:

  • Lockout tool: a short minigame that pops the lock without damaging the car.
  • Key cloner: needed for the better-protected cars.
  • Smash the window: faster, but noisy, and the car ends up damaged.

Some parked cars can't be stolen until you progress in the story and get the right tools. The driver, on the other hand, can always be pulled out of their car, as in the whole series.

Watch out for trackers: if the car has an advanced tracker, it alerts the police when you drive slowly. Either floor it or get out. There are more details from the Extended Look in our new gameplay features.

What can you do with a stolen car?

Three options, according to the scanner:

  • Sell it at a chop shop that deals in stolen cars. They pay less if it arrives damaged, although at some you can repair it first.
  • Take it to Pay 'n' Spray.
  • Register it in your name, for a fee.

Chop shops also hand out jobs: in the demo, one gave the couple the code to sneak into a police impound lot and drive off with a sports car. What all this earns you is in our guide to making money.

Your personal vehicle, your best friend

You can call it at any time. In the back it carries every weapon you've bought, and in the trunk you can keep spare clothes, which is key to shaking off the police, who recognise you by your look and the car you drive. If you've been spotted in one, the smart move is to switch cars.

Is driving harder in GTA 6?

A little. The streets are narrower, with more realistic proportions, and there's more traffic, so driving takes a bit more skill. When you're fleeing as a couple, your partner can drive while you shoot, and Nelson says they're pretty good at it.
