GTA 6 can win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026, with a single day to spare

GTA 6 will be able to compete for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026: the show requires games to be on sale by Friday 20 November at the latest, and GTA 6 launches on Thursday 19. It gets in by a single day. Here's exactly what the rules say, who votes, why some outlets doubt the jury will have time to play it and who it's up against.

When is the cut-off for The Game Awards 2026?

It's spelled out in The Game Awards FAQ: to be eligible, a game has to be on sale by Friday 20 November 2026 at 9pm Pacific Time, which is 5am on Saturday 21 November in the UK. GTA 6 launches on Thursday 19 November, so it makes it with a single day to spare. IGN was first to point it out, and summed it up perfectly: GTA 6 gets in "by the skin of its teeth".

There's no special treatment for Rockstar here. It's the standard rule, and last year's was almost identical: the cut-off for the 2025 show was 21 November. The fan-voted category, Players' Voice, is even more generous and accepts games released up to 30 November.

Put another way: any last-minute delay, however small, would push it straight into the 2027 show.

Who votes and how are the nominees chosen?

Nominations are decided by a jury of more than 100 media outlets and content creators from around the world. Each one submits a ballot with their top five picks per category, unranked, and the five games that appear on the most ballots get nominated. For the winners, two votes are combined: the jury counts for 90% and the public for 10%. Geoff Keighley, who created and hosts the show, doesn't vote.

Will the jury have time to play it?

This is the real question. Being eligible doesn't mean GTA 6 has an easy path to a nomination. Last year the nominees were announced on 17 November, before the cut-off had even passed, and this year's date isn't official yet. If the calendar repeats, outlets would have to vote before the game is even in shops.

The rules do leave a door open: publishers can send early copies to jury outlets precisely so they can vote in time. As Kotaku points out, the problem is that GTA 6 is a massive game, with a huge map and built to be played more than once, and many outlets want several people to try it before filling in their ballot. And Rockstar hasn't said when review copies will go out.

Who is GTA 6 up against for GOTY?

Kotaku reckons GTA 6 arrives in one of the most open years in recent memory. Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant have reviewed brilliantly, but there's no giant like Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3 were in their day.

Last year's winner set a record-breaking bar. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took Game of the Year and nine awards in total, the most in the show's history.

What happens if it doesn't win anything this year?

It wouldn't be its last chance. The Game Awards rules allow games from previous years to be recognised again if they get new content or major updates, and there's a dedicated category for live-service games, Best Ongoing Game. With GTA 6's online mode still to come, Rockstar could be back at the show in 2027.
