GTA 6 arrives in the middle of a war on the PS5 jailbreak

Sony released PS5 firmware 14.20 today and, while it officially only tweaks a few messages, it lands in the middle of a race between the company and the hackers trying to crack the console before GTA 6. The fear is that someone breaks the firmware the game requires and it gets pirated. Here's what happened, where the jailbreak stands and what you need to do with your PS5.

What's in PS5 firmware 14.20?

On paper, almost nothing. Sony's official patch notes for version 26.07-14.20.00 say one thing: "We've improved the messages and usability on some screens." Not a word about security. But the update weighs in at 1.2 GB, and IGN points out that some believe it's doing more under the hood.

The timing tells the story. The previous update, 14.10, landed on 2 October and was far more upfront: "security fixes" plus performance and stability improvements, as Push Square reported. Three weeks later, here's another one. And with GTA 6 less than a month away, nobody's buying that it's just about a few messages.

Why is Sony in such a hurry?

Because the PS5 is having its wildest autumn yet. In late September, a jailbreak appeared that could open any PS5, Pro included, running firmware between 7.00 and 13.60. Tom's Hardware calls it Relapse, and within a week there were Switch and original Xbox emulators running on the console. Push Square put it bluntly: PS5 jailbreaks are escalating at an unprecedented pace, and AI tools deserve a lot of the credit.

Sony's defence is the usual one: raise the bar. Some games already require firmware 14.00 to download their patches, and recent releases like Marvel's Wolverine won't even boot on older firmware. Want to play the latest games? You have to update. And once you update, the jailbreak is gone.

Is there a jailbreak for firmware 14.10 yet?

Almost. On 19 October, Gezine, one of the best-known names in the scene, posted a 14-second video with a title that said it all:

Gezine@gezine_dev

Hello 14.10

The video shows the console's debug menu running on 14.10, something that should never appear on a retail PS5. But Gezine hasn't released the method and is the first to tap the brakes: "the old way of dumping executables doesn't seem to work on 14.xx," as GamesRadar+ reports. In plain English: if you can't pull games off the console, you can't pirate anything on current firmware. Not GTA 6, not anything else.

Getting there would mean breaking the hypervisor, the security layer that watches over everything. And that's a whole other saga. In September, veteran hacker TheFlow had a hypervisor bug tucked away in a drawer, and according to Kotaku the plan was to sit on it until GTA 6 was out. Another hacker found it independently using AI and reported it to Sony on 15 September through HackerOne. TheFlow quit the PS5 scene the next day.

Sony is also opening its wallet: GamesRadar+ says PlayStation has just paid out $50,000 on HackerOne to whoever flagged a serious flaw, without saying which one.

Will GTA 6 be pirated on PS5?

Not today. And the clock is on Sony's side: every patch released before 19 November forces hackers back to square one if GTA 6 requires it. The fear, as IGN explains, is that someone cracks the exact firmware the game demands. Then it could be copied on PS5, and from there even taken to PC with an emulator. Rockstar has had enough this autumn with CyberLeek and its leak without opening another front.

It's whack-a-mole: hackers punch a hole, Sony plugs it, and round we go again.

Do I need to update my PS5 to play GTA 6?

If you play like almost everyone else, yes, and it won't cost you a thing: the console does it on its own. Sony usually requires the latest firmware to play new releases and to buy from the PlayStation Store, and day-one patches won't download on old system software either. The only thing worth doing is making sure your PS5 is up to date before the 19th, so the first thing you see is Vice City and not a download bar.
