The GTA 6 collector's box costs $400 and doesn't include the game

GTA 6 does have a collector's edition, with a catch: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection costs $399.99 (£349.99) and doesn't include the game. It's a box of 11 items inspired by Macca the Gator, Leonida's most popular TV show, ranging from Oakley sunglasses to a gator figure with a secret stash. It's sold only on the Rockstar Games Store, in limited quantities, and arrives on 19 November. Here's everything inside, piece by piece.

What is The Goodtime State?

It's the official GTA 6 collector's box, which Rockstar announced on 24 September. It isn't an edition of the game like the Standard or the Ultimate Edition, but luxury merch: if you want the game too, you'll have to buy it separately, so the whole thing comes to around $480 with the Standard Edition.

The common thread is Macca the Gator, a pink alligator in shades who stars in an in-game TV show, plus classic Vice City styling: pinks, teals, neon and plenty of 80s spirit.

Everything in the box

There are 11 items, several made with real brands:

  • Macca the Gator figure. Around six inches of pink gator, cocktail in hand, with a base that twists open to hide things inside.
  • Oakley Frogskins sunglasses. Matte black frame, Prizm Sapphire lenses and the GTA VI logo in pink. Probably the most "wearable" piece in the box.
  • New Era 9FORTY snapback. A trucker cap with Macca, the Vice City sun and Vice City Leonida lettering.
  • Leonida Keys crossbody bag. Ripstop fabric, custom zipper and embroidered patches.
  • Macca the Gator magnetic mirror. Pink glass that doubles as a tray.
  • Chunkee the Manatee shot glass, another character from Macca's world.
  • Vice City collectible swizzle spoon.
  • Vice City razor blade keychain, in metal.
  • Nine Leonida Keys enamel pins in a metal tin.
  • Nine vinyl stickers in a little bag.
  • Double-sided poster, with Macca on one side and the map of Leonida on the other.

A mirror, a spoon and a razor blade: the joke nobody missed

You don't need to look hard to get it. A mirror, a spoon, a razor blade and a figure with a stash compartment are a far-from-subtle nod to 80s Miami, the Miami of Scarface and Miami Vice, which the series has been parodying since the original GTA: Vice City. Rockstar sells it as "all the essentials for a good time", and the state's name on the box, The Goodtime State, is in on the joke too.

Is it worth it?

It depends what you're after. If you collect, it's the most exclusive official GTA 6 piece there'll be, with items from brands like Oakley and New Era and a limited run. If you just want to play, it adds nothing in-game: that's what the Ultimate Edition is for, at $20 more than the Standard.

Reactions to the announcement were anything but lukewarm: Kotaku called it a $400 box of stuff that doesn't include the game. Even so, with a limited run and this much hype, don't expect it to stay in stock for long.
