Remember GTA 4's Scooter Brothers? Now they bring you your car in GTA 6

In GTA 6 you can have your car brought to you with a phone app called Scooter Brothers: a driver drops it off wherever you are and rides away on a scooter, in tribute to one of GTA 4's most famous memes. The detail comes from Edge magazine's cover feature and was picked up by IGN. Here's how it works, why it matters more than it seems and where the name comes from.

How does Scooter Brothers work?

Open the app on your in-game phone, pay a small fee and, a few seconds later, someone rolls up driving your car. They hand it over, pull out a scooter and ride off the way they came. According to Kotaku, which also sums up Edge's feature, it isn't instant like in GTA Online or like whistling for your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2: there's a short wait, so it pays to think about where you leave your getaway car.

Edge calls the service “Scooter Bros”; IGN calls it Scooter Brothers. Same thing either way: the game has named a genuinely useful feature after a meme.

Why does calling your car matter so much?

Because in GTA 6 your car is your armory. Any weapons you aren't carrying stay in the trunk, and Jason and Lucia no longer stash an entire arsenal in their pockets, as Kotaku explains. Lose the car and you lose your gear.

It's a first for the series, too. GTA Online has let you request your vehicle since day one, but according to IGN this is the first time a GTA story mode lets you do it without cheats. And there's an obvious knock-on effect: cars are no longer disposable the way they were in previous games, where you'd steal one, wreck it and move on to the next.

Why doesn't it arrive instantly?

Because Rockstar wants a slower world. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, tells Edge they tried Vice City at GTA 5's pace and “everything felt too fast”. So they've stretched the day-night cycle, pedestrians react more to what you do, and the story builds in forced pauses, like having to raise cash before the next heist. A car that takes a moment to show up fits right in.

There's plenty more from Edge's feature in our roundup: 90 minutes of unscripted gameplay, the map and the interiors.

Where does “Scooter Brothers” come from?

From a 2008 video that pretty much every fan of the series has seen at some point. On a Justin.tv channel (the site that became Twitch) called FourPlayerPodcast, Brad Simons was cruising around Liberty City on a little delivery moped in GTA 4. He came across another scooter rider, pulled up alongside and started yelling, absolutely thrilled, that they were “scooter brothers”. That's it. And that's everything: the YouTube video has more than 7.5 million views.

Rockstar already nodded to it in GTA 5: switch to Trevor and you'd sometimes catch him on a scooter re-enacting the scene with a terrified pedestrian. Now the joke becomes an actual mechanic. What we don't know yet is whether the app's drivers will shout a line from the original video as they ride off. They really should.

It's not the only nod to the series hidden in the game: you'll find more in the GTA 6 easter eggs you'll only catch if you played Vice City.
